Diary of Captain Samuel Jenks, Tuesday, June 24, 1760

This day fair & pleasant. I had the care of a 100 men to work in the King's Garden, which is the finest garden I ever saw in my life, having at least 10 acres inclosed, & mostly sowd & improud. This day one of our pretenders to a commission was whipt a 100 lashes at post for disobeying orders & insolent language.1
